Welcome
August 10, 2015
Dear Parents,
Welcome to the fourth and fifth grade at Fruitvale Elementary School. This year has already started out with a list of familiar students moving up from third and fourth grade. I am looking forward to working with your child and you throughout the year. Every effort will be made by me to help your child be successful at school, both academically and socially. If we give each child support, structure, and a good environment, every willing child can be successful. Please let me know, in a sealed envelope, if there are any circumstances that would help me understand your child.
Materials:
Each student should have an endless supply of wide or college-ruled paper, a spiral notebook for a journal, pencils, (mechanical ones work well and are not too expensive) and a three-ring binder with dividers. Also, our class does some work with desk size white boards, so each child should bring one or more dry-erase white board markers and a clean old sock to keep them in.
Food:
Students function much better on healthy food. A good breakfast with protein and little sugar is preferred. The fifth grade recess is at 10:30 and students usually want a light snack. Lunch is at 12:14 and students are very hungry by then, so double check to make sure they have a lunch. Water is very important. Students are encouraged to bring water bottles to keep at their desks as we have no water in our classroom. Only water is allowed at their desks, no Gatorade or flavored water because when spilled, is it difficult to clean off of school supplies.
Homework Policy:
Homework will be given Monday through Thursday. Math and a minimum thirty minutes of reading will be assigned nightly with few exceptions. Other homework will include Language Arts assignments, spelling, projects to be announced, and research pieces. Your child will be given a planner and required to record their homework assignments daily and obtain a parent signature. These planners are an excellent way of communicating with me. Please feel free to write a note to me and make sure your child shows it to me.
School Behavior:
Every student is responsible for his or her behavior. Students are expected to follow classroom and school rules. These rules are in place to allow for all students safety and for a pleasant environment. All students are to show respect for the teachers, staff and others.
Textbooks:
Textbooks will be assigned according to the student’s number. It is the student’s responsibility to take care of their books. They are expensive and any damaged or lost books are the responsibility of the student and parent.
It will be a pleasure to meet each parent and work with you throughout the year. If you have any questions, please write a note, call the school at 951-765-1680, email me at [email protected].
Sincerely,
Mr. Baker
